Two years ago, Edmonton Oilers head amateur scout Stu MacGregor and his staff zeroed in on a short list of two players. The Oilers' options were clear-cut before they were called up to the podium in Los Angeles to make the first pick of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin were the only two young stars being considered by a club that had gained the top selection after hitting rock bottom.
In 2011, after another 30th-place finish, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was the group's consensus pick — a decision they had reached before they even got to Minneapolis to again select first overall.
