All the evidence the Mets need is there in Johan Santana's last four starts. He has been shelled and is a shell of the ace who was the heart and soul of the team's starting rotation.
Instead of looking at that evidence - a 16.33 ERA over his last four starts - as a rationale for pulling the plug on his season, the Mets decided to give Santana some more rope.
After discussions the last two days among Santana, the Mets coaches, Terry Collins and GM Sandy Alderson, the consensus is that they aren't going to shut him down for the season and give that surgically repaired shoulder a much-needed rest. They're going to limit him to under 100 pitches a game and evaluate him after each of his next two starts.
