However, I'm glad the owner had the balls to take the horse out of it instead of pumping it up with anti inflammatory medicine and risking it's life.

I think he's actually making sure he saves money. As much money as a triple crown winner would have to stud, you're talking about risking the life of a Derby and Preakness winner in order to increase its value by winning a race while hurt on what is the hardest race for it to win.

Darn dirty shame. Was looking forward to possibly witnessing a piece of history.

What was stopping the owner from jerking off the horse and saving it regardless of the outcome?

Maybe the owner is one of the guys who likes to romance his stable a little before getting to the old slap & tickle.
