The Blue Jackets have solidified their top two defensive pairings, signing Nikita Nikitin to a two-year, $4.3 million contract. He'll make $1.8 million this season and $2.5 million in 2013-14, avoiding restricted free agency on Sunday.
Nikitin was a revelation for the Blue Jackets, a bright spot on the blue line amid suspension, injuries, poor plays and general upheaval. Acquired from the Blues on Nov. 11, he had seven goals, 25 assists and a plus-4 rating in 54 games with Columbus, averaging 23:35 per night.
