When he retells the story of the night he got his 1,000th major league hit, there's a good chance Nick Swisher will use the phrase he employed yesterday — "laser-beam double" — to describe the seventh-inning bloop hit that fell in front of lumbering Mets right fielder Lucas Duda at Citi Field on Saturday night.
But there will be no need to stretch the truth when Swisher talks about hit No. 1,001. He didn't need help from Duda or anyone else with that one.
The Yankees' animated right fielder placed one of those floating butterflies that knuckle out of the right hand of R.A. Dickey on the endangered species list last night, smacking a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right-center field for a three-run homer to help the Yankees take the rubber game of this weekend's Subway Series, 6-5.
