NHL commissioner Gary Bettman sets Sept. 15 deadline for lockout

    The NHL will lockout the players, if no agreement is in place by September 15, the last day of the current collective bargaining agreement.

    Various sources are reporting that Gary Bettman told assembled media today in New York that the players have been warned a number of times for about a year that there is no alternative.

    "I re-confirmed something that the union has been told multiple times over the last nine to 12 months," Bettman said, according to ESPN and other sources. "Namely, that the time is getting short and the owners are not prepared to operate under this collective bargaining agreement for another season so we need to get to making a deal and doing it soon.
