I saw this league concept on the Yahoo message boards, in the Commish corner where league commish-es are looking for new owners.

THE CONCEPT: The league is 10 teams, and we start with 3 NFL teams being assigned to each of the 10 owners. Each owner may choose as many of the players from those 3 NFL teams to be on his roster as he wants, but he loses that number of draft picks (i.e. keep 5 players, lose picks 1-5). Any players not chosen to be on your team will be a part of the FA POOL. The team owner will also be required to hold onto ONE of those 3 NFL team's DEF units.

    THE PLAN:

    1. SIGN UPs- NOW
    2. Random draft order for a "NFL Team Draft" -- snake style, board draft -- each owner chooses 2-3 NFL Teams.
--> Players that are FAs at the time of the NFL Team draft will be in the filler draft only.
    3. Owners declare which players to hold onto -- must keep ONE DEF out of your 3 teams. Each player kept = 1 less draft pick (starting with round 1).
    4. Trading period -- attempt to diversify your roster.
    5. All "kept" players are pre-loaded. Late summer. Waivers/FA free-for-all begins.
CHANGE FROM PRIOR PLAN: There will be no filler draft. Trades and FA pick ups will be the main way to diversify your roster.

We'll draft 3 NFL Teams each, pick players to keep, have a short trading period.

    ROSTER: 1 QB, 1 RB, 2 WR, 2 RB/WR/TE, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 DEF. 7 bench. 16 total spots.

This made me think of an even more interesting way to do this. What if you had 2 drafts, one where managers select teams and then a second draft where they draft players from those teams.

So you start with 12 managers and each drafts 4 or 5 teams with up to 3 owners being allowed to draft a single team.

After each owner has 4 or 5 teams then you have a normal draft with the exception that managers can only select players from the teams they drafted in the first draft. Once a player is taken that player can't be taken by another owner.

Just an idea. It is pretty early so we have time to play with the idea a little more.
  5. kevin515 SRMer

Seems very interesting. Consider me in if we do this.
  6. HizzO SRMer

I'd consider it if this gets going and you need another owner
  7. Bpow0407 SRMer

So say 3 owners take the COLTS team, only those 3 owners would have a shot at Peyton Manning, but once one owner takes P.Manning no other owner could take him?

Definitely one step further into the concept.
  8. drarcher Administrator

Exactly. It really makes you have to stratigize your picks and your team selections.
  9. J-Pass The Producer

    I'm interested, keep me updated.
  10. Bpow0407 SRMer

    bump... anyone else interested?

  18. HizzO SRMer

    Sure, I'll try it
  19. Bpow0407 SRMer

Any thoughts on the roster/positions and/or use of IDP?

    Thanks guys.

I know we're all anxious for football, but we don't know how free agency is going to play out. Example, if I choose Minnesota as one of my teams in the team draft, do I get to keep Sidney Rice?

    A couple other quick questions:
    1) scoring system?
    2) keeper limits?
  21. Bpow0407 SRMer

Good question on free agents and what to do with them... hmm... I'll ponder if there's a good way to go about it, but right now I'm thinking we could just go with 2010 rosters for "NFL Team draft" and thus a Sidney Rice would be with Minnesota, Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams with Miami, and so on.

    1) I'll post that up soon. Probably rather typical scoring... maybe 30 pass yards = 1 pt; 10 rush/rec yards = 1 pt (so that 300 yards passing and 100 yards rushing both get 10 points, as both yardage milestones are considered a "great game" statistically). TDs, I usually go with 6 per, but I'll investigate the 4pt per pass TD option a little more first. IDP will include points for tackles (1 per, 0.5 for assist I'm thinking), plus higher points for sacks and INTs and such.
The scoring info will be up before any drafting takes place.

    2) Only limit is the number of spots on your roster (aka the number of rounds in the draft). If you choose to limit your team to only 3 teams' worth of players and take that boom-bust chance, that's on you. I'm thinking many of us will keep a good number of players, but still want to take part in a filler/regular draft.

If we end up with 10 owners, we'll draft 3 NFL teams a piece, which leaves 2 NFL teams undrafted, and thus those players will be available via the regular draft only. And even some of the worst teams in the league last year still had a fantasy gem or 2... a Larry Fitzgerald, or Sam Bradford, or Peyton Hillis.

And remember, the more players you keep, the fewer draft picks you have, starting from Round 1. Keep 15 players, lose picks in rounds 1-15. So if a team like Arizona goes undrafted, there might be a big advantage to keeping 1 less player than everyone else and thus having the first shot at Larry Fitz or another similar player.
  22. Bpow0407 SRMer

    BUMP....

NFL Team draft coming in the next few weeks.

ALL POTENTIAL FREE AGENTS will be on their 2010 team, unless the lockout suddenly ends and free agency occurs in the next couple weeks. Since that's unlikely, we'll just keep players with their 2010 team for the NFL Team draft and go from there.
  23. drarcher Administrator

I'll do it, keep me up to date
  24. cmnelson1987 SRMer

    Count me in I guess.
  25. claw1185 SRMer

    any updates on the start?
  26. J-Pass The Producer

Bpow this is all fine and dandy, but this isn't going to take precedence over our other league right? This is the only thread I see all the time on the boards, just want to make sure we're still working on making our keeper league work even through the lockout BS.
  27. Bpow0407 SRMer

Of course. The keeper league is my main league (that and the other keeper league that I play in but am not commish of). I keep bumping this thread to look for interest, whereas our keeper league is filled and we are kind of in limbo with no keeper decisions coming until the lockout is done.
  28. Bpow0407 SRMer

I'd like to get moving soonish, but I've been bogged down with extra hours at work plus bringing some work home, plus a rec soccer league that I joined this summer (first time).

If someone would want to come up with a scoring system that we could apply to this league, including the IDP positions we're considering, that'd definitely be a big help and get us closer to a draft.
