Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson sat in his office at Busch Stadium on Tuesday afternoon and ran through the reasons why he believes his team has struggled in one-run games. For Gibson, it's not overly complicated.
"We've made mistakes," he said. "They've been critical."
A few hours later, the Diamondbacks were in the middle of another would-be one-run game. You might be able to guess what happened.
Two errors helped the St. Louis Cardinals lengthen their lead in the seventh inning and they blew the game open in the eighth en route to an 8-2 victory over the Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game series.
