Dolphins quarterback David Garrard has a simple plan for when he takes his first hit in Friday night's preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"I'll knock the dirt off myself and keep right on moving," he said.
Garrard and the Dolphins can only hope it goes that smoothly. Garrard, 34, sat out all of last season after having surgery in October to repair a ruptured disc in his back.
Now he is listed first on the depth chart and is the leader to be Miami's opening day quarterback after outplaying Matt Moore and rookie Ryan Tannehill through the first two weeks of training camp.
Last September, Garrard was unceremoniously dumped by Jacksonville after 10 years of service — five as a starter — in favor of rookie Blaine Gabbert. Garrard hasn't played in a regular-season game since the end of the 2010 season.
