There are still 26 days left before the NHL's collective bargaining agreement expires, but the looming lockout has already claimed its first victim: the Detroit Red Wings' annual prospect tournament.
"Due to the uncertainty surrounding the collective bargaining agreement and the advance commitments required from the various parties including hotels, airlines, teams, players and their families, we have determined that it is in everyone's best interest to cancel this year's tournament," Detroit GM Ken Holland said in a statement relayed via the Red Wings' website.
"This is the first time that the tournament ... has been cancelled in its 15 year history."
