The Kings' Keith Smart is among the least experienced NBA head coaches, and of those, only Mark Jackson at Golden State (23-43), Dwayne Casey at Toronto (23-43) and Monty Williams at New Orleans (21-45) lead teams with records similar to Sacramento's 22-44 mark during the 2011-2012 season.
The question must be: Are a coach's energy, personality and potential enough to make a losing team a winner?
Smart leads a team with a core of undeniable talent. DeMarcus Cousins is expected to be a force. Tyreke Evans, still seeking a definitive role, has shown occasional brilliance. Guard Isaiah Thomas could be a stabilizing force. Interesting offseason moves have created a pool of talent deep enough to make the phrase "significant improvement" something other than a wistful utterance for the team and its fans.
