Tampa Bay Rays RF Matt Joyce could be headed to the disabled list today if the tightness in his lower left back does not show improvement.
"We can't say no, can't say yes, yet," executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said before Thursday's game with the Nationals. "With Matt, we're going to keep playing it out and see how he responds and see if he gets significantly better day after day. It hasn't happened to date. We'll definitely take it into (today) and see how he feels and make a decision from there."
Joyce hasn't played since he was removed from Tuesday's game after his fourth-inning at-bat.
"I hope not," Joyce said Thursday when asked about a possible trip to the DL. But with backs and sides, it's kind of an in-between spot, so it's tricky."
Joyce said the possibility of going on the DL had not been discussed with him, but he does understand the Rays' need for healthy players.
