There’s one less veteran on the Patriots depth chart at wide receiver.
The team announced Tuesday that they have released wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez. Gonzalez signed with the team in March as a free agent, but he wasn’t at OTAs last week and clearly didn’t convince anyone that he could be an asset for them this season.
Gonzalez was a first-round pick of the Colts in the 2007 Draft. He caught 94 passes in his first two seasons with Indianapolis, but injuries have limited him to 11 games and five catches over the last three seasons. The career revival he hoped for in New England won’t be happening, leaving the likes of Brandon Lloyd, Deion Branch,Jabar Gaffney and Chad Ochocinco to battle for snaps across from Wes Welker.
The Patriots signed two players — offensive lineman Jamey Richard and tight end Nick Melillo — to their 90-man roster. They also officially announced the signing of seventh-round pick Alfonzo Dennard.

    Uhm...so?

Hey, shoot me. It's a slow day in the Software pimping game...:)
  4. Barreh SRMer

You got me good Ronin. Reading the title, I thought you were referring to Tony Gonzalez. Those exclamation points were unnecessary especially for Anthony Gonzalez who is irrelevant.

The dog days of the NFL offseason.

It was the same thing I was thinking. Good one Ronin.

Well, might be worth a pickup.....if he is healthy.

I'm thinking he makes a GREAT 3rd WR
  13. gribbzz SRMer

I was thinking the only reason he was even picked up is if Welker held out. Considering he is signing his tender and won't miss any time he had to go. It's too bad but that's the name of the game.

Now what will happen with the rest of these guys.
  14. Ronin Sexual Tyrannosaurus

I'd keep Gonzo and dump Chad ocho zero.

I would say, if you really want to maximize views, add some upside down exclamation points at the beginning next time. Brings in more of the spanish-speaking market.

On topic though, I guess he just didn't look like he had recovered in whatever offseason stuff they've done so far. He had some good promise his first few years (though I could show promise with Peyton throwing to me).

    Ergo Blair White...
  17. gribbzz SRMer

Different positions at WR. Although I wonder if Ocho Cinco will make the team.
  18. Ronin Sexual Tyrannosaurus

Considered that, but if I had someone here would have accused me of pandering to my Latino base...;)
  19. gco211 Moderator

    Not pandering, including.

    Tell me more!
I think we should have divisions based on cup size...

When the Patriots signed him a friend who's a Patriots disciple was fully erect. I was not impressed. Gonzalez was still a player who'd never done anything and couldn't stay healthy.

Seems that he is who we thought he was, and the Patriots figured that out fast.
  25. gribbzz SRMer

That's how a lot of us are when the patriots sign anyone, me included sometimes. I thought it was just a band-aid just in case welker held out, even if he was one of those crappy plastic from the dollar store brand of band-aid. Once they got word he wouldn't do that he was cut.
  26. bipolarboy SRMer

It always puzzles me what goes on when veteran players get signed to contracts and then get before training camp. I'd love to know what they see when these decisions are made that they didn't see before the contract offer went out.
  27. cmnelson1987 SRMer

In this particular case, I'm guessing they saw Wes Welker sign on the dotted line. haha
  28. gco211 Moderator

They hoped to see him healthy and in great shape. He wasn't, so they probably lost $10k on the deal or so. It's very low risk to see if a player put it together over an offseason when it might be rude/cost you a signing to ask him to workout beforehand.
