I knew Turner would be cut, did not expect the other 2. Abraham led them in sacks.

Falcons release three veterans

The Atlanta Falcons cleared some salary-cap room Friday, releasing running back Michael Turner, defensive end John Abraham and cornerback Dunta Robinson.

By letting the three veterans go, the Falcons put themselves $15.9 million under the cap, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Turner saved the team $6.4 million, Abraham $5.75 million and Robinson $3.75 million, the paper reported.

"As a football coach it is never easy to cut any player, especially veteran players who have been valuable members of the organization," Falcons head coach Mike Smith said in a statement posted on the team's website. "The guys we released today have contributed to the success that we have had over the last five years, and we greatly appreciate their efforts."

Turner, 31, rushed for 800 yards and 10 touchdowns last season as the Falcons reached the NFC Championship Game. He also split time last season with second-year pro Jacquizz Rodgers.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Turner had spent the past five seasons with the Falcons after playing his first four years with the San Diego Chargers. He has rushed for 7,338 yards and 66 touchdowns in 134 career games.

Acquired by the Falcons from the New York Jets in 2006, the 34-year-old Abraham registered 68.5 sacks over seven seasons with the Falcons and has 122 in his career. He collected 10 sacks last season.

Robinson, 30, played three seasons with the Falcons after signing a six-year, $57 million contract in March 2010. In 47 games with the Falcons, Robinson totaled 214 tackles, 4 interceptions, 1.5 sacks and 24 passes defensed.

I can't see Turner being a featured back anywhere, he's taken too much of a beating. He would be a good short yardage back somewhere. I'd take a look at Robinson, still has some years left.

Turner looked bad last year. He had 2 or 3 good games. Not sure if it was the O line or he just fell off. Always liked him he'll be an amazing backup if he's willing to take on that role.

Problem with Turner is that he isn't a pass catching RB, and this is a passing league now. He's best off, as stated above, being a short yardage guy.

The only 1 of the 3 that I'm somewhat surprised to see cut is Robinson.
