Emotions run high for Archer in debut

    It was strange to hear Rays rookie pitcher Chris Archer talk so freely about his emotions Wednesday night after making his major league debut at Nationals Park in Washington.

    Most players, when asked the standard question, give the standard answer.

    Us: How were your emotions?

    Them: OK.

    Instead, Archer talked about searching the stands for his parents and the handful of close friends who made the drive from Clayton, N.C. These are the people, Archer said, who truly know how hard he worked to finally climb a big league mound. He thought of the sacrifices his folks made so he could play ball and how his friends encouraged him to dream his dream.

    He was overwhelmed by emotion, and so he found himself crying.

    "If I had seen him shed a couple of tears I probably would have shed a couple with him," David Price said.

    Crying in baseball?

    It's April 5, 2005, Opening Day for the Houston Astros. Rookie Luke Scott made his first big league team out of camp and found himself in the starting lineup against the defending National League champion Cardinals.
