Marty Lurie informed his KNBR listeners recently of a debate being waged in media circles, centering on the best catcher in the Bay Area's major-league history.

"Every time I mention Buster Posey," Lurie told me, "I get shot down."

Don't worry about it, Marty. You're dead right.

Posey obviously can't match longevity with Tom Haller or Terry Steinbach, and perhaps he'll never call a game quite like Mike Matheny or Dave Duncan. But he stands alone in terms of talent, and the rest of his career will render the arguments pointless.
