Any time someone says "in my experience" or uses that in their argument it is usually pretty biased. | If you are talking about instability and viruses, that has a lot more to do with the widespread use and versality required by the PC world. There is no doubt that a Mac is a higher quality product, but you are also paying a lot more and it's abilities are limited when compared to a PC.
Also in general Mac users are douchbags, but that is another topic.

Rep Power: 22 | | The deal is at Best Buy and not a doorbuster for the Mac. I refuse to buy garbage brands when im forking out money for a new TV. I will only buy LG. The 55'' LG are at 1400 right now but im banking that I can get it on sale around SuperBowl time.
I hate PC's as I always have trouble with them. Plus I have an iPod and digi camera so looking forward to using iPhoto and iTunes again. The nice thing about Macs is theyre ready to go out the door. With laptop you need anti this and anti that and by the time youre done starts closing in on the price of a Mac. Did you find this post awesome? Yes |

To be fair it had all of the software I could ever need for anything, not that I could use that software.
My brother and sister have laptops for college as well, they both suck the big ones...
My mom is on her 3rd PC in 4 years. I wonder why?
I'd say from my experience Macs are better. Quote: |

| Agreed, I become a douche bag when someone comes out and says that I bought an over price piece of crap. I get what I pay for and it certainly isn't crap.
Look, I get why people like products that are inferior machines, I am an xbox fan. No doubt xbox made an inferior product hardware wise but they at least make it up with their online play and game selection. How do PCs make up for their machines being crap? put windows on it! woo hoo. Quote: |

| I don't know about the beatles part but I am sure a huge portion of them drive VWs. it could have something to do with those are also superior to american made cars. Just a guess. Quote: |

| LG is a good brand, but if you are looking for quality only why not look at samsung. In a lot of opinions they surpassed every other brand in quality and price. Did you find this post awesome? Yes |

Rep Power: 12 | | Gribbzz, I wasn't attacking you. Just in my experience dealing with Mac users, they are douchebags, at least the ones I have known. Their holier than thou attitude is just too much to take. I have no problem with Macs, they just do not have the level of functionality of a PC. Yeah PCs have a lot more problems, but there are also a whole pile of people making them and their parts and trying to make that all compatible is not an easy task. Also even though my office is a Microsoft shop, I completely hate Microsoft. That doesn't stop me from having an Xbox and knowing that they are a necessary evil. Did you find this post awesome? Yes |

However I was looking at getting a MacBook and Best Buy has those on sale on Black Friday for $999 but you get $150 gift card with it as well. What would you guys do? | That's an easy one.. I would go for the compuer since you don't have one at home and it seems like you already have a decent TV..

Rep Power: 20 | | Personally, and I'm getting the impression that this opinion is going to be of no use to to you, I'd consider a Windows laptop and the TV. You can pick up a pretty quality laptop for $500, and if it's got Windows 7 you're set. I understand that people have massive problems with Windows but in my experience that's generally on them. Anymore, if you download a video and it tries to have you to install a program, that's on you. Common sense gets you by anymore without the need for Anti-virus or anything else that hogs system resources. I haven't run an anti-virus since 2002 or so, and have had one problem with my system, albeit recently. That's more than I can say about my friends with Macs. Windows had some major growing pains between not recognizing how big of a deal viruses were to the brand in the early decade and its implementation of a graphics stack in the past several years, but it's gotten through them and is now a very stable and safe OS.
Personally, Macs aren't "snappy" enough for me. That's a pretty general consensus as well even within the Mac world which I keep a close eye on due to me owning a few shares of Apple stock and my love of the iPod. They're not going to crash generally, but they're not as good as a PC for my uses when both are working properly. That being said, the iPhone kicks the shit out of any Windows Mobile Phone, especially when jailbroken. Love Apple's creativity, but I hate their refusal to let me do what I want and their decision to overprice most of their products dramatically.
If all you're doing, for the most part, is web browsing, Microsoft Office, multimedia, and a few other odd things, then a Windows laptop and the TV is the clear decision in my opinion. If you really need the Mac, then I'd go with that, as your current tv is fairly nice and the prices of TVs will likely continue to fall during the next year.

I have both, but I don't have the Mac-Crack to say they are better.
First the bug reports for Leopard > Snow Leopard are through the roof. Why? Bad quality control? More people using Macs (still below 10%)? Probably a little of both.
Virus are as easy to get on either machine, though virus writers don't spend the time to infect < 10% of the population. Plus now-a-days most malware/virus' are sent through flash, pdfs, java, etc, and are not OS specific.
Less problems with a Mac? Well if Windows had only 1 video card maker, 1 memory maker, 1 LCD maker, 1 driver maker, ..... to account for and be responsible for (even though it isn't MS fault) they would have less precieved problems. Macs work fine with their limited vendor needs, but Microsoft has 10,000+ different vendors they have to deal with. Tell me how Apple would do if they opened their platforms - not very good.
But even with that the perceived difference is really just perceived. They do almost the same thing. Most errors on machines are human errors - for both Macs and M$ systems. Obviously you hear the complaining of the one that has a 90% market share.
Apple makes a good product, but it has it's faults. Microsoft makes a good product (especially Win 7), but it too has it's faults, but only one gets 'blamed' right now.
I just priced out a new laptop. Top of the line Mac vs. a top of the line, Dell, Asus, and Sony. I'd save at least $1300 and I'd get everything that is the same except on the Mac I'd have a worse graphics card, worse drive. Screens, memory, HDD, etc would be the same.... Unless the Mac comes with $1300 worth of crack, it isn't worth it. The build quality of the Dell XPS 16 is top notch. It's not unibody - but thankfully it isn't. I can change a battery or swap out a wireless card when the standard changes, etc.....
BTW, one of my lappies - 3 years and counting. Another one, 5 years and counting. Another one 1 year and the Mac 1 year. All are great.
This doesn't count all the PCs I've bought over the years for businesses, etc.... And all have lasted a great amount of time.
Anyway, back to the post topic.
Get the computer. Everyone needs a computer at home.

I remember when the biggest breakthrough in technology was a game called "Pong" then Atari came out and we were excited as hell...
I'm getting old...

It was great and I remember feeling all cool because of it... Now I have multiple computers and I still can't compare to others.
The interesting question to me is have these 'machines' really made our lives easier or did they first make our lives more complicated and now they are used to ease the complexity.... Same with a lot of technology.

Same with a lot of technology. | I just downloaded an episode of 30 Rock that hadn't transferred properly from an external hard drive earlier. I am now watching a show that aired 4 years ago for free. I don't know if life is easier, but it's certainly better.
