HOUSTON (Ticker) - The Houston Texans on Wednesday named former Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman offensive coordinator.
Sherman is the fourth offensive coordinator in franchise history. He replaces Troy Calhoun, who left to take the top coaching job at Air Force.
In another move, Kyle Shanahan was named the team's quarterbacks coach.
Sherman joined Houston this past season after six years as coach of the Packers, going 56-39 with five winning seasons. The 52-year-old served as assistant coach this past season with the Texans, a title he will retain.
Although quarterback David Carr completed a career-high 68.3 percent of his passes, Houston remained one of the league's worst offensive teams en route to its fifth straight losing season.
The Texans went 6-10, finishing 27th in passing yards (173.6) and 28th in both total yardage (279.1) and scoring (16.7 points).
Sherman previously was an offensive coordinator with Seattle in 1999.
Last season, Shanahan, 27, served as wide receivers coach in his first season with the Texans. He was the youngest position coach in the NFL.
The son of Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, Kyle Shanahan began his NFL career in 2004 as a offensive quality control coach. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slu...v=st&type=lgns |
I'm disappointed Sherman didn't get another shot somewhere. He really did a great job in Green Bay, especially on the offensive side of the ball. He just got a bad deal from the GM side of things from Ted Thompson. I was pulling for Sherman to head some place that needed some offensive ingenuity, or at the very least to hopefully take Jim Bates with him to Arizona. Alas, I was wrong, and we'll have to wait another season for him to get another look.
