Keeping him for one more year will not raise his stock any if he doesn't perform. Maybe they have no faith that he will?
I obviously have no idea what the team's opinion of Daunte is, but it's possible they just plain don't want him, regardless of the legal and injury issues.
I don't know what reality is - just throwing out that possibility...

Rep Power: 17 | | Vikings sign Ryan Longwell, will kick game winners AGAINST the Pack now. Quote:
Mark Craig, Star Tribune
Last update: March 11, 2006 – 5:05 PM
Packers kicker Ryan Longwell has signed with the Vikings, the team confirmed this afternoon. Terms of the deal were not immediately available.
Longwell, who has spent all nine of his NFL seasons in Green Bay, has a career field goal accuracy percentage of 86.1. He made 20 of 27 field goals (74.1) last year.
In 2004, he made 24 of 28 (85.7), including a pair of game-winners against the Vikings. The second one came at the Metrodome on Christmas Eve and gave the Packers their third consecutive NFC North division title.
Other free agents visiting today are Chargers linebacker Ben Leber and Ravens running back Chester Taylor. The team has confirmed both visits.
A deal with Leber could be reached as early as today, his agent said this morning.
“The way we work is the first team we visit is the team we feel we’ll get a deal done with that day,” said Jeff Nalley, who also was en route to the Twin Cities to work on a deal. “Seven teams called us [Friday] night. The Vikings are No. 1 on our list.”
Leber, a 6-3, 244-pound outside linebacker, was limited to nine games in 2005 because of a foot injury. When healthy, he’s considered a good fit for the coverage and pass rushing skills required for the Vikings’ Cover 2 defense.

Rep Power: 25 | | i wouldnt start the culpepper/TO comparisons....way too soon for that IMO.
not interested in chester taylor, i'd rather go with moore and OSMITH, and/or draft someone.
longwell is an upgrade over edigner, outside of the game winners he wasnt overly impressive.

I can't remember when they had a "real" kicker and not a UPS guy or whatever Jose Cortez was. Longwell is a very solid kicker and kicking indoors will help him out tremendously. Just watch out for his excuses when he misses a kick. They are pretty lame.

Rep Power: 10 | | The Chester Taylor signing is interesting. For the past few years the Vikings have had a number of solid backs but no one RB ever outplayed the others to get to be full time starter. Moore, Fason and Taylor will be a solid group but I am guessing they are hoping Taylor will solidify the position. Did you find this post awesome? Yes |

Just watch out for his excuses when he misses a kick. They are pretty lame. | What excuses would those be? I must have missed them. | take a look at this realting to Longwell's missed field goals against Minny last October. Ryan’s Whining: I was disappointed to read Ryan Longwell’s excuses for his missed field goals against the Vikings. According to Longwell, he missed his 42-yard attempt because B.J. Sander did not perfectly tilt the ball. This wasn’t a case of Sander mishandling the snap, or putting the ball down in the wrong spot, or failing to get the laces turned toward the goal posts. This was about tipping the ball ever so slightly.
Longwell didn’t miss his 42-yard attempt by a whisker. He missed it badly. If just the slight slant of the ball can make that much difference to Longwell, perhaps something is wrong with Longwell’s mechanics. It is asking too much to expect Sander to make a perfect hold on every kick. Plus, it simply isn’t professional or productive for Longwell to publicly blame his miss on Sander. When a team is losing, players should rally around each other, not point fingers. http://www.jsonline.com/packer/insid...h=10&year=2005
this is just one of the many.

Rep Power: 13 | | I think he exaggerated Ryan's reasoning a bit. Have you ever tried place kicking before? If the slightest thing goes wrong, it can affect the kick drastically.
Longwell came into the season as one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history. But this year he had a new holder, and things went bad. That should tell you something.

And when the kicker was one of the best kickers statistically in league history coming into the year, but suddenly starts doing bad with a new holder, it's more than likely because of the holder.
I'm not saying a player can't just suddenly fall apart, but when you have something as important as the hold being changed, there is a better chance it is the holder and not the kicker.

Also why in the world are we throwing money down the drain on Chester Taylor? He is exactly what we have. A very medicore back who will not out perform the others. Did you find this post awesome? Yes |

His numbers don't lie, when filling in for JA, he was solid. Did you find this post awesome? Yes |

Pepper is as damaged goods as you can get (his knee and shitty ME FIRST ATTITUDE). THat would be like trading Moss for a 3rd round pick a season after you gave up too much for him in the first place. Davis would commit suicide before he did something stupid like that. Did you find this post awesome? Yes |

Rep Power: 16 | | Though Ryan has been slipping the last two years I think it is a good pick up for the Vikings. Kicking indoors will help him out a lot. He missed some big kicks for us last year.
I have my hopes up that Green Bay is targeting AV. He has routes in the Packer Organization. I think they have the cap space and he isn't going to lose the games that Longwell costed us last year. IMHO. Did you find this post awesome? Yes |

Rep Power: 9 | | First off - us being in the game against the Pack! Yeah ok - we will see! As far as Taylor, pretty interesting. I guess they believe he will be a #1 back. Have to agree - sign Hutch! I don't think we are getting him - as I believe Seattle will never let this guy go. Anybody know anything about the LB we signed? And, thank goodness we signed Koren. Still some hole to fill, but it feels they are moving in the right direction. If we can settle this PEP thing we will be able to move further. Did you find this post awesome? Yes |
