Default As expected NBA loses revenue - lowers salary cap

Salary Cap Set At $57.7 Million For 09-10 Season

Jul 07, 2009 10:33 PM EST
The National Basketball Association today announced that the Salary Cap for the 2009-10 season will be $57.7 million. The tax level for the 2009-10 season has been set at $69.92 million. Any team whose team salary exceeds that figure will pay a $1 tax for each $1 by which it exceeds $69.92 million.

The 2008-09 Salary Cap was $58.68 million and the tax level was $71.15 million. Although league-wide revenue increased 2.5% this past season, the decrease in the Salary Cap and tax level for the 2009-10 season is the result of the formula used to set the Cap and tax under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

The new Salary Cap and tax level go into effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday, July 8, when the league’s “moratorium period” ends and teams can begin signing free agents and making trades.

The mid-level exception is $5.854 million for the 2009-10 season and the minimum team salary, which is set at 75% of the Salary Cap, is $43.275 million.

EDIT/CORRECTION:

The NBA didn't lose revenue. They gained 2.5% from last year.

Don't think it's been updated for this years numbers yet, but a good resource for trying to understand the salary cap...

In further news, the NBA expects the salary cap to be even lower next year....

A lot of people, including myself, said this would happen and all these teams trying to get under the cap for the 2010 FA class were just fooling their fans.

The NBA released a memo warning teams that the cap could go as low as $50 million (from it's current $57.7 million). Though $50 million is a low, the NBA projects the cap to be at $53.3 million for the 2010-2011 season.

Worse case scenario teams that think they'll have enough cap space to sign two top notch FA's next year, might not even have enough space to sign one to a max contract.

Most teams expected the cap to go up.. Maybe to even $61 million a few years back. Doh!
