With Andruw Jones only days away from gaining trade veto power, the All-Star center fielder was claimed on waivers by an unnamed team, leaving the Braves until 1 p.m. ET Saturday to decide whether to take their last opportunity to deal Jones unfettered.
That Jones was placed on waivers is unremarkable; he was one of hundreds of players, including many stars, who were placed on waivers earlier this week. What makes Jones' situation interesting is that on Aug. 15, he will gain 10-and-5 rights -- 10 years in the big leagues, five with the same team -- to block any proposed trade.
Multiple teams placed claims on Jones, according to major-league sources. But on Thursday afternoon, one team was awarded a claim on Jones. Now the Braves have two choices -- either work out a trade with the team who placed the claim by Saturday or pull Jones back from waivers. If they pull him back, they cannot trade him again for the rest of this season.
Jones' value in the trade market is relatively high right now, because he is a highly productive player locked up for only one more year -- at $13.5 million -- at a time when players like Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee might command $70 million packages on the free-agent market.
The Boston Red Sox tried to deal for Jones leading up to the trade deadline, with some intent to try to flip him to the Houston Astros for Roy Oswalt. Some scouts also think that the Los Angeles Angels, who've been looking for a bat, might have high interest in Jones.
Atlanta GM John Schuerholz, reached on his cell phone, said Friday afternoon that he would not comment on the team's internal business.
It will be very interesting to see if this was just done as a formality, or if anything will come out of this. I really don't like the move at all, but we'll see . I would think that if they wanted to trade Andruw, it would have been better to have done it before the trade deadline. I guess my thinking on this is that now they can only deal with that one team that claimed him. The leverage is now with that team that claimed him. I bet that they had hoped that he had cleared waivers so they could trade his services to the best bidder. Now, that is not the case. I may be wrong about this, but for some reason I thought any player attained through the waivers after the trade deadline is not eligible for the post season roster. Am I wrong?

Your half right. From September 1st on, trades can still be done through waivers, however, those players are not eligible for post-season rosters. Anyone aquired from 4 PM July 31st-August 31st are eligible for post-season rosters.
The team with the worst record of the teams claiming a player gets 48 hours to a trade done, if nothing happens it that time the the team who placed the player on waivers has to take him off and can't trade him for the reason of the season. This is all bullshit anyway, every year hundreds of players are put on the waiver wire and are claimed by teams and nothing comes of it.
I doubt it...Jones would go to the lowest team who put a claim in for him. Obviously since the Red Sox and Yankees are high up in the standings their claim would lose out to a lower team in the overall standings.

Does it really matter? Andrew Jones is not going anywhere unless a boatload of prospects are coming to Atlanta. There won't be high grade prospects like Santana or Milledge since teams wouldn't let them go through waviers, so I highly doubt the Braves would trade Jones for lesser prospects just to dump him.

It would only matter if the Braves and the team who's claim was awarded by the league could reach a trade agreement.
Jones is officially staying with the Braves this season. Next season he might be traded though. Supposedly the group that is looking to buy the Braves are a bunch of cheap bastards. Needless to say if they do buy the Braves they probably won't try to resign Andruw. My guess is that he will be looking for $75 Million or more after next year. That is a hefty price tag for any franchise not named the Yankees, Mets or Red Sox.
