not saying living, although he's clearly on his dick, but there are plenty of people in philadelphia that think jayson werth is a superstar. just listen to sports talk radio here - granted it's less than 1% of the fan population that calls in and voices their opinion, but IMO if you ask the majority of phillies fans they believe werth is a superstar player.
No, no one would say he's a superstar. This is just a dumb conversation. People might and would say hesvthwir favorite player. That doesn't make him a superstar or mean they consider him a superstar. He's just a fan favorite. He comes across as a blu collar, hardworking guy who'd not making a lot of money. That's why he's popular, not because they think he's a superstar.

very well put. he is has one of the best player value per dollar in the mlb, and plays his ass off on top of that. he is like an aaron rowand type, except a little worse defensively, but muchhhh better offensively.
Charlie Manuel and Joe Maddon really fucked up the all star game. Werth has had a good power year but he is not an all star. Give it to Ethier, Kemp, or Pablo Sandoval. Also Zach Duke must have pitched pretty damn well against Cholly's boys since he gets to take Matt Cain's spot even though Yovani Gallardo has been lights out. Joe Maddon abused the power as well. Carlos Pena hits a lot of home runs but his average is .230. Russel Branyan? Miguel Cabrera? And how is Jason Bartlett an all-star? Managers shouldn't get to choose reserves it should be players picks because Charlie is going to take every god damn Phillie and Joe will take every fucking Ray

Do you want some cheese with that whine? Not enough yankees on the team for you?

Werth has better numbers than Kemp and Ethier. Victorino was selected by the fans. Ibanez and Utley are the best at their positions. Ryan Howard probably does not deserve it, but I have no problem with him in the game. The NL is loaded at first base.
If you are complaining about any Phillies player, it should be Howard not Werth.
Is it correct for him to pick a player on his team over one of the players who was part of the final vote? If the starting 3B for the NL team was hurt, the logical choice would be Sandoval who plays the same position and was part of the fan vote, right? And were Sandoval voted into the final slot, Manuel would have 100% chosen Victorino as Beltran's replacement into the ASG. I'll give you Werth over Ethier, I don't think Ethier belongs in the conversation for All Stars but Kemp has similar numbers in a pitcher's park hitting like 8th in the lineup and plays a WAY better OF. Basically all the reasons stated in this thread. But yeah Broxton was replaced by Hoffman, big shock since I really expected a random Phillies reliever to replace him.
Sandoval should be in, that's a no brainer. Werth is only in because Manuel thought that "his guy" deserved it. I hate the All-Star game and all it stands for, especially now that is stands for a lot more than it should, yet fans are still morons and vote for the most popular player instead of the players that will help their team win and land their conference home field advantage. It's not that I'm just mad about this year with plenty of Giants being overlooked (Wilson, Affeldt, Pablo), but the fact that this happens to so many worthy players every year. Worst marketing scam in sports. Fans should vote, but there should be a threshold of numbers a player must achieve to be elligible. Obviously equivalent to what is above average that current season, but something other than what we have could be better.
Jayson Mendoza is hitting .267/.370/.513/27HR/74 RBI/20 2B/13 SB while batting primarily in the 6th hole (recently moved ahead of Ibanez).
He sucks.
Here you go again - I never said he sucks. He is a nice player having a career year, but too many Phillies fans make him out to be a superstar. You just continue to prove my point by constantly posting about how great he's playing - you make him out to be mickey mantle reincarnate. Not everyone is going to agree with you on everything so live with it and cool your jets with the posts. Your man-crush on Werth is just as bad as the one you accuse me of having on Tebow. You're like George Costanza in that Seinfeld episode with Elaine's boyfriend Tony.

Jayson Bruntlett sucks again with another homer today.
He now has 29HR and 79 RBI.
And meLLody, the same thing you are saying I am doing to you, you are actually doing to me. When did I ever say he was a superstar? I said he belongs in the All-Star game and is putting up better number than Grady Sizemore has ever put up in a season (though I did add the caveat that I would take Grady over Werth). He had the numbers then, and he defiintely has them now. If he were hitting higher in the lineup than the 6th spot, he'd have much better numbers than he has right now. He's going to end up with 35HR and close to 100 RBI. That's is incredible for a guy who you think sucks.
And while we're on the subject, Victorino belonged in the All-Star game as well.

I have no idea what that .472 stat for Werth was....but:
Kemp
.305avg/.362obp/.502slg/23hr/91rbi/32sb + better fielder (higher UZR) + younger + actually on MLB's list of final all star selections
Sandoval
.322/.377/.541/21hr/77rbi/4sb (also on MLB's list of final all star selections)
Ethier (about as arbitrary a selection as Werth was as a replacement for Beltran)
.282/.365/.523/28hr/94rbi/6sb
conclusion:
Still a HOMER choice by Manuel. Kemp is threatening 30-30 this year and should win a gold glove.
So, what you're saying is Werth has a higher slugging percentage, more home runs, and a higher OBP than Kemp. Clearly Kemp deserved it. Both are good defenders, with Kemp being better. Sandoval should have made it if you're taking any position, but if you're limiting the search to outfielders, Werth is still the right choice.
Also, who the hell cares who was on the final 5 final vote ballot.
