Since acquiring this site, the goal has always been to bring this site to the highest level possible. Many things needed to happen along the way to get this to a point for expansion.
1. Move the site to vBulletin and incorporate all its features. (check)
2. Promote members to staff positions. (check)
3. Address the needs and concerns of the community. (check)
Everything seems to be falling in place and now it is time to move forward in promoting the site, gaining more traffic and registering new members. Those items are what this new development revolves around.
Everyone here likes to report the news and we have some dedicated members who find news stories and post them here to share. Well, I want to take that to the next level, a much higher level.
Below in a link to a new flipper that I am going to be putting on the home page in the near future: Possible Variation #1 Possible Variation #2
The main idea is that the four MAJOR sports are going to have a news forum added. (nfl, mlb, nba, nhl) I am planning on promoting people to a "News Reporter" staff position. News reporters will find news, post the first paragraph with a link to the source and attach a picture if they can find one. (picture posts will go into the flipper, so obvious pictures attachments are better.  )
You might be asking, "What's in it for me?"
I actually have given this a lot of thought and their is an incentive for being a News Reporter. Each thread has an ad unit right below the first post on every page. If you report a piece of news, you OWN that ad unit. I will place your ADSENSE code into that spot and you will get paid for the clicks on that ad unit. The more news you post, the more you get paid. Plain and simple. (verifying with Google that this is not against their TOS, if so, I will have another plan to get you paid from adsense clicks.) *** UPDATE ***
It is confirmed that google DOES allow this! So this is 100% a go for the site.

The overall affect of this news section is mainly to increase traffic. And with this site setup the way it is, it will dramatically increase the amount of users on the site and any given time.
I do welcome some feedback. I hope you guys see this as a positive change.

Outstanding!
I like Possible Variation #1 for starters. As for reporting news, what about original articles (like my Purple Pride Ponderings). We have several here that write rather well and love to report on the teams and sports of their choosing. Would that be possible as well? Besides, some of us write circles around the authors of the articles we paste here! (take that Star Tribune Beat writers!)
Also, can Mods become reporters as well? I'd like to help and make a little extra jing in the process (Daddy needs a new game once in a while). Finally, I used to be a Staff writer for a Gaming Site, I could report on gaming news as well, and trust me, that will generate some traffic. |

I am going to give some though about the original story thing. Might get it going with just outside news being posted in, but I like the idea SRM community members writing unique articles. I will definitely give this some serious thought.
The home page news will be solely sports related, at least at the start. I will figure out if this is something to expand on into other categories of the site. (games, tv, movies, etc...)

I'd be interested if I could only wrtie about the local teams....on a Nat'l Level, IMO there isn't anything out there that we couldn't or already did find out from ESPN faster.
Originallity in articles regarding teams, or whether its just copy and pasting stuff, I really like reading what everyone posts about the NFL and NHL on here.

robdog... I don't know your capabilities as a web designer are but here is a site that I think has done a good job with making links accessible from the front page of the people who write for the site... I also like that they have a facebook type chat thing at the bottom of the page. There are a few things I like about that site but I do like the fact that all the new topics are posts on the front page here. As you can see the flipper is on the home page with "some" late news from the last couple of days. I wanted to show you guys what it was going to look like and get some feedback before we kick off the News Reporter program tomorrow.

hehe... nah just some plugin that I modified to fit into our setup here. I will continue to tweak as we need.
