It definitly adds another element. I am in a long term (10+ years) keeper league like this and you will see whacky trades at the trade deadline because teams will want to make a run. So a team might trade Clinton Portis and TO for Brandon Jacobs because jacobs is good for the playoffs while the other two are not. Our trade deadline is in November so it is tough. A guy did a few of those trades this season and then lost his last 2 games to not make the playoffs (he would have had a killer playoff roster otherwise).
I didn't like it at first, but I like how it makes the playoffs and Super Bowl more exciting when my team is not involved.

As for bironas, he has a bye the first week so you should pick up a kicker for the wildcard round.
Remember players that are on a bye week wil not get you any points in the first round.
