FFL Keeper League '09: Season started; FAs available
This will be the official thread for the SRM FF Keeper league, going into the off-season and preparing for Season 5 in 2009.
DRAFT RULES: 1. Your pick is due AT or BEFORE the time listed with your name. You make your pick AFTER the team before you picks or exactly one hour before your pick is due -- whichever is earlier. (for example, if you are set to pick at 5PM, and the team before you has NOT picked by 4PM, you may make your pick at 4:01PM if you wish... or if you are up at 5PM, and the team before you made their pick at 3:01PM, you may make your pick as early as 3:02PM)
2. ALL TIMES ARE EST.
3. Trading is permitted. All trades will be pending approval from Archer, myself, or Yankees (2 typically needed) - but the draft will continue as if the trade was approved. Unfair or unequal trades will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
4. When you post your pick, post it in the DRAFT FORMAT as is listed below. Copy the draft order including a few picks prior to yours and a few picks after yours -- this helps the teams after you to be reminded that they are up, and helps them to see who has been taken recently. Copying the whole current round is not always necessary, but is preferred.

The following 3 individuals will comprise the trade committee: BPow, Yankees, and Archer.
2 out of 3 members of the trade approval committee must approve of any trade before it is made official (as well as both parties posting the trade).
TRADING RULES
Trading was 'opened up' prior to Season 3 (previously, # of players had to match and/or # of picks had to match). As long as the trades are fair, trading is permitted.
A few rules:
-- When we decide on keepers, you can only have 5. If prior to declaring keepers, you traded away every single draft pick and now have 12 keeper-worthy players -- you still must pick 5 keepers.
--No Trading of future years' draft picks.
--IF, after the draft, you don't have enough players to fill your roster - too bad. You will have to wait for Free Agency to begin (for everyone). There will be NO compensatory picks.
--IF you end up with more players and draft picks than could fit on your roster, your last round(s) of draft picks will be dropped such that you have the exact number of draft picks to finish filling your roster. (You can not draft more players than you have room for on your team.)
--AFTER the keepers are selected, you CAN trade for players. After we cut down to 5 players, you CAN trade for a 6th player (or 7th player, etc.). [You'll be thinning out your bench to strengthen your top players; a balance of advantage and disadvantage, and thus we permit it]

Off-Season Potential Rule Changes (please copy/paste with responses)
1. Keepers: stay with 4 this off-season or increase? Increase next off-season?
I would be in favor of an increase to 5 keepers, either this off-season or for next off-season. Either works for me.
2. Scoring: We currently do not punish QBs for INTs - keep this rule, or make INT's (-1) or (-2) points?
I am in favor of INTs counting as (-1) points. I choose (-1) because fumbles are (-2) and fumbles are usually the result of the player, while INTs may be the result of the QB or the result of a tipped pass, wrong route by the WR, etc... so I choose the lesser penalty for INTs.
3. Keeper maximums: keep the same, or increase? (if we increase the # of keepers, we will change the maximums)
If/When increasing keepers to 5, I'd be in favor of 3 RBs or 3 WRs being kept (obviously 3 of each can't be kept)... or... (if/when we increase to 5 keepers), 4 total RB/WR being kept, with a max of 3 WR or 3 RB (so you could go 1 WR, 3 RB, 2 and 2, or 3 WR and 1 RB, but would be forced to keep a QB/TE/DEF/K -- more flexibility with RBs and WRs, while increasing the importance of QBs.
4. Scoring: All FGs are currently 3 points. Keep the same.. or increase the points for 40+ and 50+ yard FGs?
I'd be favor of 4 points for 40+ and 5 points for 50+, but no decrease in points for shorter FGs.
5. Draft set-up: Straight draft, snake draft, 2 straight rounds and remainder snake, other set-ups??
I honestly don't know. I think we argued this one last off-season. For a low # of keepers, a straight draft really doesn't fit, as most teams are similar in talent.
6. Any other issues that Team Owners wish to bring up? NONE

1. Stay with 4, I'm probably one of the teams that would benefit the most from keeping more, but I think 4 is enough.
2. I'm in favor of -2. A QB should not have a huge day if he throws 200 yards, 3 TDs and 3 INTs. -2 would actually somewhat negate the massive points he would receive in that scenario.
3. Nope, we need to allow for the drafts to have some decent players in it, we ensure this by keeping the limits already in place.
ff-Season Potential Rule Changes (please copy/paste with responses)
1. Keepers: stay with 4 this off-season or increase? Increase next off-season?
Also in favor of an increase to 5 keepers - 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 PK/TE/D, 1 Flex (usually a RB or WR)
2. Scoring: We currently do not punish QBs for INTs - keep this rule, or make INT's (-1) or (-2) points?
Also in favor of INTs counting as (-1) points.
3. Keeper maximums: keep the same, or increase? (if we increase the # of keepers, we will change the maximums)
I'd just as soon finalize Keepers for the Draft and forget the drop down phase but it doesn't really matter that much.
4. Scoring: All FGs are currently 3 points. Keep the same.. or increase the points for 40+ and 50+ yard FGs?
I'd also be favor of 4 points for 40+ and 5 points for 50+, but no decrease in points for shorter FGs.

Straight the first 2 rounds. and snake rounds 3 on,...
6. Any other issues that Team Owners wish to bring up? nope.

I suggest getting rid of Kickers completely. IMO, there is limited strategy when it comes to drafting a kicker and the top players fluctuate far more every year than any other position. It is a lot of dumb luck. Nick Folk was nothing more than this years Neil Rackers from a few years ago...and so on and so on. Personally, I just hate kickers in FF, they are like a pet peeve of mine. I mean how gay is it when your going up against a guy who happens to have the kicker who scores 20 points that week?
-I like adding 1 keeper, but don't like restrcitions.
-I like snake draft*
*Although maybe we could do something like a 2-3 round rookie draft that is not a snake and then have the rest of the draft as a snake. Just throwing it out there.
If anyone is looking to get out, I am willing to take on a team in a solid dynasty format. I do not want to headhunt, but if someone has expressed interest in getting out, or someone wants to express that interest privately, PM me.
Increase keepers to 5... Increase the max for RBs and WR to 3... Ints count for -1... Don't really care about FGs... And I think doing the draft before the NFL draft is a good idea, then some point after, the leahe draft and NFL draft are over, do a rookie draft.

That's why I'd rather lessen their impact.
It pisses me off when my kicker gets 4 pts and Adrian Peterson runs for 200 yds and 2 TDs, getting 32 pts.
Then a kicker takes part of a big rout in another game and nearly matches what Adrian Peterson did. I think that's fucked up. No kicker has ever had that big of an impact on a game. The offense puts him in position to make that kick. Those 3 pts maay be awarded to the kicker, but he alone did not score them all on his own.

It might be an interesting idea (while also retaining interest throughout the off-season and making this a tougher league) to have a short draft (3-4 rounds) before the NFL Draft, then a rookie draft after the draft, and finally a "filler" draft mid-to-late summer... keep your keepers, draft the rest of your core before the NFL Draft (but after Free Agency begins?), grab a top rookie (I think 1 round is all we'd need, but we could do 2 for kicks), and fill out your team as depth charts begin to be solidified in the pre-season. It would cause some people to take some risks up front, and it would make the first few picks in the filler draft very valuable (instead of people getting a "steal" in round 6-7-8 because a player became a starter in training camp).
So, that situation would look like this:
-4-5 Keepers (due in Feb.)
-3-4 Round core draft (late march through April)
-1-2 Round rookie draft in May/June
-4-7 Round filler draft in August.
Or we could just combine the rookie draft and the filler draft, and go with:
-4-5 Keepers
-3-4 round core draft in march/April
-6-8 round filler draft, including rookies, in late July/August.
Hell, if someone wanted to be really risky, they could take a projected top rookie in the core draft in March/April without knowing what team he goes to.
If anyone is looking to get out, I am willing to take on a team in a solid dynasty format. I do not want to headhunt, but if someone has expressed interest in getting out, or someone wants to express that interest privately, PM me.
Re: FFL Keeper League 2009: Rule changes? (please reply)
1. Keepers: stay with 4 this off-season or increase? Increase next off-season? 4 seems pretty good. I would be alright with 5. More than that seems like a lot.
2. Scoring: We currently do not punish QBs for INTs - keep this rule, or make INT's (-1) or (-2) points? I'm fine with either as is or -1 if you want. -2 is too much. On the same side, I think fumbles are penalized too much. A player loses two points for a fumble, but the defense only gets one? Seems odd to me.
3. Keeper maximums: keep the same, or increase? (if we increase the # of keepers, we will change the maximums) I think the max numbers are fine. It's hard enough getting a decent RB now as it is. Maybe changing the max if we increase keepers could be looked at.
4. Scoring: All FGs are currently 3 points. Keep the same.. or increase the points for 40+ and 50+ yard FGs? I'm fine either way again. I wouldn't decrease points for shorter FG's though. Of course people say kickers don't influence games. Until you've had a crappy kicker, you don't realize the difference they can make. While they can be a crap shoot, anybody who's played realizes the influence they can have in a fantasy game. And hell, much of fantasy is luck anyway. Sure, the kicker has help from the offense, but you're telling me that Adrian Peterson is going to go for 200 and score twice if he doesn't have folks blocking for him?
5. Draft set-up: Straight draft, snake draft, 2 straight rounds and remainder snake, other set-ups?? How was it last year? 2 straight and then a snake? Obviously, I have to vote for the snake draft this year. Although in all honesty, it's a tough call. Weaker teams are already closing the draft when players have to be dropped from rosters (unless they don't have any good keepers anyway, in which case they're screwed). So then how much more benefit do you give them? It's a tough call.
6. Any other issues that Team Owners wish to bring up? I hate the idea of an earlier draft. That turns the entire thing into a crapshoot if you don't know where people are even going to play when you draft them. Our early draft brings more luck into it than typically anyway, although that's pretty much necessary with the way we do it online. Shoot, how many of us made picks this year early for guys who ended up being backups by the time the draft ended and the season starts? For every steal somebody gets late in the draft, somebody gets stiffed from another player earlier.
And every yard of offense (penalties not included) go to a positional player (or 2, in the case of passes) on offense and thus the offense gets credit for moving the ball into FG range. FGs are worth 3 points in the NFL, I don't see why they should be worth any less in fantasy.
Your plan for FGs would devalue kickers by 20% of their worth in terms of points (2511 points by kickers this year with 3pts/kick; would have been 2031 points under your system). I'm tired of hearing fantasy football people continue to believe that kickers are worthless, pointless, etc. Maybe you should just pay more attention to them, take a few more minutes thinking about the O.v.D. matchups and how that'll affect the kicking game, research SOS for kickers, etc. The positional players are just as inconsistent in points as kickers are. In your example, what happens when Peterson only nets you 3-6 points (week 5 or 16, for instance) instead of 24-28 points (week 7 or 10, for instance)? How do we deal with those inconsistencies? Or how about when your kicker boots a record 8 FGs in one game, but only gets 16 points, equal to your opponent's TE who got lucky with a fluke 80 yard TD catch - his only catch of the game? Will that be equally fair?
Looking back, now that the season is over...
--Only 7 of the top 14 K's in Points/game and Points total are owned
--#3, 4, and 5 overall in total points are unowned.
--Only 3 of the top 12 kickers from Week 14-17 are owned
--There were 34 total kickers picked up throughout the season.
--The top 3 kickers had a nice margin separating them from the remainder of kickers. The top 2 kickers are owned by SG (champ) and Archer (3rd).
--9 of 14 owners picked up 2 or more kickers throughout the season. Buckeye picked up 3, Yankees 4, and Livin' 11. J-Pass, Ty, Venom, Bengals, and Kobe all made 1 or no K additions. Venom, Bengals, and Kobe had the 6th, 7th, and 8th ranked K's, so they didn't need to make a big change. I had the #3 and 9 ranked kickers, at some point, and went Homer late in the season with Jeff Reed. J-Pass and Venom, who made only 1 K move within the season, ended the season with 7 kickers ranked higher than the K on their roster.
Scanning through the other positions, there are no cases that I can find where there is a team carrying a stater who is doing worse than a FA at the position. At the skill positions (QB, RB, WR, TE), FF guys scan the FF list and waivers for guys that are upgrades to their rosters. For some reason, many FF guys don't do that with kickers. And that's no one's fault but their own.
