Patrick Peterson, Daniel Thomas highlight Week 1 risers and sliders - NFL - SI.com...

Patrick Peterson, Daniel Thomas highlight Week 1 risers and sliders - NFL - SI.com

The college season kicked off last week as NFL prospects from around the nation displayed their talents for league decision-makers. Several prospects looked good in the season opener, while a few high-profile prospects turned in disappointing performances.
Risers

Patrick Peterson*/CB/LSU: The top-rated junior cornerback had a quiet night defensively, as he was rarely challenged by North Carolina QB T.J. Yates. Peterson still impressed NFL scouts in the return game, accumulating 244 return yards and one score by halftime. When the game was over, Peterson's line read 157 return yards on four punt returns and 100 return yards on three kick returns (and five tackles).
Aldon Smith*/DE/Missouri: We ranked Smith third on our list of defensive line prospects last week, and he proved himself worthy on Saturday. He was a force against the Illinois option attack, leading the Tigers with 10 tackles, three tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. Smith's speed and ability to make plays in every direction are impressive.
Daniel Thomas/RB/Kansas State: Thomas was unstoppable against a solid UCLA defense that possesses a number of good NFL prospects. His final numbers: 28 carries for 234 rushing yards and two scores. Thomas showed power and durability, carrying the Wildcats to victory, and justified the third-round grade prior to the season.
Kyle Rudolph*/TE/Notre Dame: Rudolph showed reliable hands and helped the Irish get off to a quick start, catching four passes during the first quarter. Yet, it was his blocking that really stood out, as Rudolph looked dominant run blocking and in pass protection. He consistently handled Purdue's Ryan Kerrigan, one of the nation's best pass rushers, in one-on-one assignments.
Zach Pianalto/TE/North Carolina: After struggling with injury throughout his junior campaign, a fully healthy Pianalto was another tight end tough to stop in Week 1. He led the Tar Heels with eight receptions against LSU and looked sharp blocking. Scouts graded Pianalto as a free agent prospect coming into the season, but that opinion must be re-evaluated.
Steve Schilling/G/Michigan: Schilling, who looked liked a star in the making as a freshman, has struggled the past few seasons adjusting to Michigan's motion offense. On Saturday, he showed signs of major improvement in his ability to block on the move and annihilate opponents at the point.
Drake Nevis/DL/LSU: His stat line of four tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack barely tells the story. Nevis was a nuisance to the veteran Tar Heel offensive line all night, with his quickness and playmaking abilities resulting in false starts and errant snaps by the opposition.
James Kerley/WR/TCU: Kerley came up big for the Horned Frogs during their win over Oregon State. He led the team with six receptions and one scoring catch. His 19-yard reception late in the third quarter kept alive TCU's game-winning drive. Kerley has all the makings of a fourth receiver at the next level.
Sleeper Alert
Kelechi Osemele*/OL/Iowa State: The Cyclones left tackle was dominant in the first game against Northern Illinois. Osemele did a terrific job protecting his passer, then destroyed opponents run blocking. He possesses the skills and brute strength to start at right tackle or guard in the NFL.
Sliders

Greg Romeus/DL/Pittsburgh: Romeus was non-existent during the Panthers' overtime loss to Utah. The senior totaled just four assisted tackles and was handled most of the night by first-year starter John Cullen, who played for Fullerton (Calif.) Junior College last season. Romeus had been struggling with back problems through most of August camp, something which must be taken into account.
Michael Pouncey/C/Florida: Pouncey's initial foray to the center position was an adventure in the Gators' win over Miami of Ohio. The former guard struggled with the shotgun snap throughout game. Florida QB John Brantley was forced to continually scoop up low snaps or reach for errant snaps which threw off his timing. Pouncey has time to recover, but must significantly improve before scouts seriously consider him as a next-level center.
Lawrence Wilson/OLB/UConn: Wilson was given a top-75 grade by scouts who love his athleticism and ability to swiftly move sideline-to-sideline. His lack of size is a concern, since Wilson is built like a safety at 6-feet, 218-pounds and it was evident in the loss to Michigan. Wilson was easily blocked from the action, constantly got caught up in the wash; and on a number of occasions had ball handlers breaking his tackles before picking up yardage after contact.
Notes: It was a successful return for a number of prominent NFL prospects who did not play in 2009 or suffered through injury-plagued campaigns, starting with Mark Herzlich. The Boston College linebacker showed flashes of his prior dominance against Weber State and lost none of his intensity on the field. He totaled four tackles, a successful performance in every conceivable manner. ... Ricky Brewer, who sat on the sidelines due to a suspension last year, led Colorado State with 10 tackles in the Rams loss' to rival Colorado. Brewer's a terrific athlete that pursues the action sideline-to-sideline with speed. ... Oklahoma State running back Kendall Hunter, who was never healthy as a junior, turned in a brilliant performance against dismal Washington State. Hunter totaled 257 yards on 21 carries, a 12.2 average, and crossed the goal line four times.
The Simon Fraser Clan have taken one giant leap for Canadian post-secondary institutions, as they prepare for their first season as a member institution of NCAA's Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference, the Globe & Mail reports.

After playing as a provisional member in the conference last year (supposed to be a two-year process), they were granted full membership for the 2010-11 season after Canada West, the Canadian Interuniversity Sport association that SFU played in, put all of the Clan's athletic teams on probation, not allowing them to participate in this year's season.

With the GNAC offering full membership a year earlier, the Clan become the first non-U.S. member to join the NCAA, and definitely set a precedent for other Canadian institutions.

It has long been argued that Canadian institutions could not recruit the same calibre athletes as American schools because of the lack of athletic scholarships and stricter regulations that CIS has than NCAA. Many have criticized this system saying that Canada's top high school athletes leave the country to pursue positions at American schools, which is for the most part true.

Now that SFU has become an NCAA member, it will follow it's recruiting and scholarship regulations, and will be a definite draw to high school athletes across western Canada.

That's got to get the mind flowing for other major Canadian university sports programs, and bloggers are already speculating that the University of British Columbia (located just down the highway from SFU) and Universite Laval, which is located in Quebec City.

The school will also save money on football travel, due to taking bus trips as opposed to having to fly across four Canadian provinces, and on football playoff costs as NCAA foots those bills.

They will enter teams in men's football, men's and women's soccer, basketball, track and field, swimming and diving and cross-country, as well as women's volleyball and softball.

The SFU football team will begin their season tomorrow against the Western Oregon Wolves at home.

This Saturday, both Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez were on the ND sidelines for the opener against Purdue, cheering on the Irish and greeting Brian Kelly in a Snoop Dogg approved manner. Take that, all you haters claiming ND only has ugly chicks! Sure, the school does, but we've got hot celeb fans now, and still maintain the always attractive Saint Mary's College chicks across the street.
The guy is a tremendous recruiter but he can't recruit a QB and is a terrible X's and O's guy.

Nike Pro Combat uniforms are going to be worn by 10 college football teams this season, and they are set to be revealed at an event in New York City on Wednesday.

Ohio State, Alabama, Florida, Boise State, Miami, Oregon State, Virginia Tech, TCU, West Virginia and Pittsburgh will all sport these unis at least once this season.

To get a look at the uniforms, go check out USA Today's photo gallery, where you can view each individual one. Among the differences from the regular uniforms, Nike told USA Today the Pro Combat line is 37 percent lighter than normal garb.

Notice Ohio State will have a red helmet -- a sight Buckeyes' fans are certainly not used to seeing. It is a "salute" to the 1942 national championship team that wore red leather helmets. Also, Virginia Tech will don all black uniforms Monday against Boise State in easily the biggest game of the opening weekend. What makes this odd is that black is not an official color of the Hokies. According to the Tech website, this color draws inspiration from the school's Corps of Cadets.

Newly independent BYU quashed all fears that it might have to rejoin the Mountain West today. It will remain independent in football and join the West Coast Conference in sports other than football.

It announced an eight year television deal with ESPN (and any games ESPN chooses not to broadcast will be shown on BYUtv) for home football games. Several of the home games will not be played on Saturdays according to the BYU AD.

Additonally, it reportedly extended its deal with Texas by three games.

Finally, it also added a six game series with Notre Dame. This one is huge as it unites the two biggest independents and also allows a high quality game later in the year. Independents usually have trouble signing teams for games in October and November as they are deep into their conference schedules, but with this deal in place, both teams will have a high caliber game (or two when ND plays USC to end the season every other year) in a generally uncompetitive time for independents.

The Big Ten will announce its much-anticipated, two six-team divisional setup for the 2011-12 season later Wednesday, with traditional football powers Ohio State and Michigan in opposing divisions and new member Nebraska aligned with the Wolverines.
Multiple sources told ESPN.com that the two divisions in the Big Ten will look like:
• Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern and Minnesota.
• And Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana and Illinois.
The Big Ten issued a press release saying it would announce its divisional alignment at 7 p.m. ET Wednesday. According to sources, the divisions were decided upon Monday.
According to multiple sources, the Big Ten wanted to preserve a number of traditional rivalries such as Michigan-Michigan State, Iowa-Minnesota, Purdue-Indiana and Indiana-Illinois.
The Big Ten is also expected to announce a consistent crossover game in football similar to Ohio State-Michigan that will be played each year. Expect to see longtime rivals Wisconsin and Minnesota playing every season.
In men's basketball, according to sources, the Big Ten is expected to play a 16-game conference schedule by taking a model similar to those used by the Big 12 and the Southeastern Conference. In those leagues, teams play each division opponent twice and then single games -- three at home and three on the road -- against teams in the opposing division.
The Big 12 will finish such a format this season after it loses Nebraska -- the Cornhuskers are joining the Big Ten as its 12th member -- and possibly Colorado, if the Buffaloes can leave the Big 12 for the Pac-10 while paying its exit fee.
If the Big 12 goes to a 10-team conference then it will play a true round-robin schedule of 18 games in 2011-12. The new Pac-12, with the additions of Colorado and Utah, also will likely use this new format of 16 games after playing a true-round robin of 18 games as a 10-team league. The Big Ten played an 18-game conference season and will finish with that unbalanced schedule this season.

WAC tells Nevada, Fresno St. to cough up $5 million
Posted by John Taylor on August 30, 2010 4:01 PM ET

Last Thursday, it was reported that Nevada sent a letter to the WAC informing them of their decision to leave for the Mountain West Conference following the 2010-2011 school year. It was subsequently learned that Fresno State had sent essentially the same later.

Today, the conference said not so fast my friends.

In a press release issued by the WAC, commissioner Karl Benson made it very clear that the league fully expects the two schools to both remain in the conference through the 2011-2012 school year and pay a $5 million penalty -- each -- for leaving the conference. Here's the full text of the conference's release.

Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson announced today that Fresno State and the University of Nevada must pay $5 million each for failing to abide to a corporate resolution they both agreed to earlier this month that called for both to remain members of the WAC through June 30, 2016. Fresno State and Nevada announced on August 18 that they would join the Mountain West Conference. Both schools were notified on August 27 with a "demand for payment" letter and have 60 days from that date to make payment. The two schools are also required to compete in the WAC during the 2010-11 season and the 2011-12 season as neither school announced their decision to withdraw from the WAC prior to the June 30 deadline as required by WAC Bylaws. Both schools were also notified of this on August 27.

"The WAC fully expects to receive the $5 million from both Fresno State and Nevada and will take legal recourse if necessary to obtain the money," said Benson. "As for the termination date, WAC Bylaws make it very clear that Fresno State and Nevada must remain in the WAC through the 2011-12 season unless the WAC authorizes an 'early out.' Fresno State and Nevada leaving the WAC following the 2010-11 season would cause irreparable financial harm to the remaining WAC members in terms of football scheduling and potential loss of revenue from television and bowl games. The damages that Hawai'i, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State and Utah State would incur could exceed as much as $2 million per school."

Nevada has previously claimed they never actually signed the "corporate resolution" and are thus not subject to the penalty. It's highly doubtful either school would pay the multi-million dollar penalty before the Oct. 26 deadline.

It goes without saying that the WAC is attempting to keep the two school in the conference as long as possible in order to find suitable replacements, something that's likely necessary in order to hold on to any hope of getting BYU to move their non-football sports to the conference. Given the stance of the two sides, this get even uglier in very short order.

Posted by John Taylor on August 30, 2010 2:16 PM ET

The month of August has officially become craptastic for the University of Missouri.

On the heels of the latest of three drunk-driving charges to be slapped on various members of the football program, one of the most talented players on the offensive side of the ball has been hit with the most serious charge to date.

According to the Columbia Missourian, running back Derrick Washington has been charged with deviate sexual assault. The lone charge is a felony.

Washington, who's led the Tigers in rushing the past two seasons, was indefinitely suspended last week by head coach Gary Pinkel for "unknown" reasons. Washington had an order of protection filed against him in June after a woman had accused him of sexual assault the same month. The order of protection was issued on June 22 and a court hearing was scheduled on July 7. The hearing was rescheduled for July 22 at the request of the alleged victim, but neither party showed up on that date.

The case was dismissed without prejudice and the door was open for another filing at a later date. Apparently, that's now the case.

The felony hanging over Washington's head means it's highly likely that he will be unavailable for the opener against Illinois, although, given the seriousness of the charges facing him, that's the least of his worries right now.

It's a fancy term for felony Class C rape. Sounds like she was either drugged or too inebriated on drugs/alcohol to NOT resist him.

Alright SRM here it is. I think most of you are familiar with the rules, but I also realize that there are probably some newbies lurking about, so here are the rules:

1. Pick ONE game from the following list where you think the underdog will win the game outright.
2. If your underdog does win, you will be awarded the number of points in the spread.
3. Points accumulate throughout the season, and scores and updated totals are posted weekly.
4. You may play as many or as few weeks as you want – fewer weeks played, of course, will not help your overall points standing.
5. If you are unsure whether you have already picked for the week, please check back through the thread before picking.

And finally when making your pick please include the point spread with your pick. It makes it a lot easier when I go back for scoring.

Here's the picklist for week #1 (Home team in CAPS):
New book to allege major Miami violations; NCAA on standby
Posted by John Taylor on August 29, 2010 7:22 AM ET

Far enough removed from the roaring eighties and nineties to make it seem like they were nothing but strangely entertaining visitors from a distant planet, the Miami Hurricanes have done a remarkable job over the past few years reshaping their off-field image, even as they have yet to come even remotely close to duplicating the on-field success of the halcyon days of the football program.

For all of the flak Randy Shannon has taken for his won-loss record, his police record and the way his players conduct themselves both on and off the field have been a stark contrast to Jimmy Johnson's 'Canes. Now, after all of the polishing done to the brand by Shannon and company, it appears someone with both a connection to the program and a sordid past is looking to tarnish what's been gradually built over the years.

Former UM booster and convicted criminal Nevin Shapiro, the Miami Herald writes, is writing a book about the UM football program in which he alleges former Canes players committed major NCAA violations.

Shapiro spoke to the Herald from a jail in New Jersey, where he is awaiting sentencing next month on a $900 million Ponzi scheme that reportedly left upwards of 60 victims with losses totaling $80 million. While Shapiro refused to go into the violations contained in the first draft of a book titled The Real U: 2001 to 2010: Inside the Eye of the Hurricane, he did identify players such as Jon Beason, Devin Hester, Antrel Rolle, Randy Phillips, Robert Marve and Kyle Wright as former 'Canes he was close with.

Additionally, Shapiro claimed he was close with with Clint Hurtt, Miami's former recruiting coordinator and assistant coach who left for a job at Louisville this offseason.

Shapiro has been lauded by as recently as five months ago for a $150,000 contribution he made for the university. Now, the businessman is looking to tear down something he was once a part of, due in part to what seems like hurt feelings brought on by players blowing him off once they left The U for the NFL.

"This will be a tell-all book from a fan and booster perspective,'' said Shapiro, who did not attend UM. But why write a book that will hurt UM?

``I want to make the average fan aware of what really exists under that uniform,'' he said. ``They might be great players, but they're certainly not great people. I'm speaking of no less than 100 former players.''

Shapiro, 41, is angry because ``once the players became pros, they turned their back on me. It made me feel like a used friend.'' He was motivated by ``heartbreak and disappointment on behalf of the university, which I considered to be an extended part of my family."

The NCAA is aware that allegations are forthcoming from Shapiro, but will not decide whether an investigation will be launched until they get their hands on the specific claims Shapiro will make. "When reasonably reliable information has been obtained indicating intentional violations may have occurred, the enforcement staff will undertake a review of the information in order to determine the credibility," NCAA spokesperson Stacey Osburn said when asked if they would act on the claims of a person serving time.

Shapiro hopes to have his book published by December. Until then, it appears a shadow will be looming over a football program that, according to some, are on the verge of bursting back onto the national title chase scene this season.

Way to cast a pall, Shapiro. Nice going.

UNC Schedules Press Conference After Report of Academic Violations
8/26/2010 4:45 PM ET By Will Brinson

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, according to Inside Carolina, uncovered some "academic issues in their own review" and self-reported these findings to the NCAA.

These self-reports come on the heels of two separate trips by NCAA investigators and, as a result of the NCAA's investigations and Carolina's decision to self-report these academic violations, the university has announced a press conference at 7:30 p.m. EST Thursday.

It is believed and has been reported by numerous outlets, notably Joe Schad of ESPN, that as many as nine players -- and possibly more, many of whom are believed to be "standouts" or "starters" -- were placed on the scout squad after coach Butch Davis closed Thursday's practice to the media.

The reports coming out of Chapel Hill -- as well as nationally -- imply that the "academic issues" relate to a tutor or former tutor and was reportedly uncovered by numerous e-mails maintained on the UNC servers. It is believed that these "academic issues" are separate from the NCAA's investigation into agent interaction.

Greg Barnes of Inside Carolina reported on the radio that he had heard as "few as six" and "as many as 12" players were moved to the scout team and implicated in the academic issues.

According to numerous reports, including a report on ABC 11, which was confirmed to FanHouse by a separate source, the press conference will "cover both investigations."

Davis and athletic director Dick Baddour will be in attendance, along with UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp. His attendance was confirmed in an e-mail from the school announcing the press conference. Before that confirmation, Barnes told 99.9 The Fan, "that's big time" if Thorp attends.

Loran Smith replaced as UGA sideline reporter

4:48 pm August 26, 2010, by Tim Tucker
(Updated 8 p.m.)
ATHENS — After 36 years as sideline reporter on radio broadcasts of University of Georgia football games, Loran Smith will not be in that role this season.
He’ll be replaced by Chuck Dowdle, the former WSB-TV sports director.
Smith will continue in his other long-time role as co-host, with Neil Williamson, of Georgia’s three-hour radio pregame show, the “Tailgate Show.”
Georgia associate athletic director Alan Thomas said the change of sideline reporters had been “contemplated” since the 2008 retirement of legendary play-by-play voice Larry Munson altered the “dynamics” of the broadcast.
“I had 36 good years on the sideline,” Smith told the AJC Thursday night. “It’s been fun, and I appreciate the support of the Georgia people.
“I had a good time, and I look forward to more good times. I don’t have to be on the sidelines to enjoy the broadcast and my role.
