Albert Pujols Irked by Colby Rasmus' Reported Trade Request -- MLB FanHouse...

Albert Pujols Irked by Colby Rasmus' Reported Trade Request -- MLB FanHouse

ST. LOUIS -- Tony La Russa may be trying to squelch talk of a rift between him and Colby Rasmus, but the Cardinals' outfielder isn't doing his part.

In response to a report in Sunday's St. Louis Post Dispatch that Rasmus had asked for a trade earlier this season, La Russa said that he had spoken to Rasmus about it and was convinced that he had a change of heart: "He realized the grass isn't always greener."

When reporters approached Rasmus, his answers were cryptic and non-commital. Asked about La Russa's contention that Rasmus was happier now with the Cardinals, Rasmus said: "If that's what he said, I don't have a comment on that."

Albert Pujols, the team's unquestioned star and leader, had plenty to say on the Post-Dispatch report, bristling at the idea of Rasmus' trade request.

"I'm a leader on this ballclub," Pujols said. "If I hear somebody on this ballclub saying they don't want to be here, then, you know, they shouldn't be here."

The three-time NL MVP said he would speak to Rasmus in the near future about having respect for his teammates and the Cardinals organization.

"This is something that should be between him and the manager and the GM, and plus he needs to get more years in the league before he says something like that and disrespect the players (here)," Pujols said.

"If you don't want to be part of this special organization ... then you know what, you need to go and figure out a place to play.

"It is a privelege to play in this organization ... to be in the postseason almost every single year, it's pretty special"

Rasmus, for his part, did little to illuminate the situation.

Asked if he was happy with the Cardinals, he said: "I'd rather not answer that if I don't have to."

Asked if he wanted to be back next year, he said: "I'm not going to say either way. I come in and play hard either way."

So there you have it. Clear as mud. Rasmus has frustrated the Cardinals with inconsistency, which La Russa said stems from the times that he loses the strike zone. The Post-Dispatch also reported that the Cardinals have questions about his "toughness and willingness to accept criticism."

A former first-round pick, Rasmus is a center fielder with five-tool potential, so there will certainly be a handful of clubs willing to take a shot at him if the Cardinals decide to move him.

That doesn't sound too likely, if you listen to St. Louis general manager John Mozeliak.

"Colby is young and may not always understand how to handle the media," Mozeliak told FanHouse after a 4-2 win over the Reds on Sunday. "He is a tremendous talent and we are going to give him every opportunity to do it here."

Alex Rodriguez Sets Record With Latest 100-RBI Season -- MLB FanHouse...

Alex Rodriguez Sets Record With Latest 100-RBI Season -- MLB FanHouse

A day after coming off the disabled list, Alex Rodriguez made some more history Monday.

With a solo homer in the fourth inning off Brian Matusz and a sacrifice fly in the sixth, Rodriguez reached 100 RBI this season. It's the 13th consecutive year he's reached the century mark and the 14th time overall -- a major league record.

Rodriguez had been tied with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx, three Hall of Famers who posted 13 seasons of at least 100 RBI during their careers.

Rodriguez' homer was his 22nd of the season, but he'll have to go on quite a run to reach 30 homers for the 13th consecutive year and 14th overall.

Yes, the Bills have C.J. Spiller, but by at least one measure Buffalo could go winless in 2010. The Bills would kill for an average offensive line. They're decent in the interior, but their tackles stink. The two biggest hits quarterback Trent Edwards took this summer were when right tackle Cornell Green got beat, and left tackle Demetrius Bell was among the league's most penalized linemen last season -- and he played in only eight games. ... If any team has a chance to go 0-16 this season, it's the Bills.

Week 1 Risers and sliders for 2011 draft

Patrick Peterson, Daniel Thomas highlight Week 1 risers and sliders - NFL - SI.com...

Patrick Peterson, Daniel Thomas highlight Week 1 risers and sliders - NFL - SI.com

The college season kicked off last week as NFL prospects from around the nation displayed their talents for league decision-makers. Several prospects looked good in the season opener, while a few high-profile prospects turned in disappointing performances.
Risers

Patrick Peterson*/CB/LSU: The top-rated junior cornerback had a quiet night defensively, as he was rarely challenged by North Carolina QB T.J. Yates. Peterson still impressed NFL scouts in the return game, accumulating 244 return yards and one score by halftime. When the game was over, Peterson's line read 157 return yards on four punt returns and 100 return yards on three kick returns (and five tackles).
Aldon Smith*/DE/Missouri: We ranked Smith third on our list of defensive line prospects last week, and he proved himself worthy on Saturday. He was a force against the Illinois option attack, leading the Tigers with 10 tackles, three tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. Smith's speed and ability to make plays in every direction are impressive.
Daniel Thomas/RB/Kansas State: Thomas was unstoppable against a solid UCLA defense that possesses a number of good NFL prospects. His final numbers: 28 carries for 234 rushing yards and two scores. Thomas showed power and durability, carrying the Wildcats to victory, and justified the third-round grade prior to the season.
Kyle Rudolph*/TE/Notre Dame: Rudolph showed reliable hands and helped the Irish get off to a quick start, catching four passes during the first quarter. Yet, it was his blocking that really stood out, as Rudolph looked dominant run blocking and in pass protection. He consistently handled Purdue's Ryan Kerrigan, one of the nation's best pass rushers, in one-on-one assignments.
Zach Pianalto/TE/North Carolina: After struggling with injury throughout his junior campaign, a fully healthy Pianalto was another tight end tough to stop in Week 1. He led the Tar Heels with eight receptions against LSU and looked sharp blocking. Scouts graded Pianalto as a free agent prospect coming into the season, but that opinion must be re-evaluated.
Steve Schilling/G/Michigan: Schilling, who looked liked a star in the making as a freshman, has struggled the past few seasons adjusting to Michigan's motion offense. On Saturday, he showed signs of major improvement in his ability to block on the move and annihilate opponents at the point.
Drake Nevis/DL/LSU: His stat line of four tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack barely tells the story. Nevis was a nuisance to the veteran Tar Heel offensive line all night, with his quickness and playmaking abilities resulting in false starts and errant snaps by the opposition.
James Kerley/WR/TCU: Kerley came up big for the Horned Frogs during their win over Oregon State. He led the team with six receptions and one scoring catch. His 19-yard reception late in the third quarter kept alive TCU's game-winning drive. Kerley has all the makings of a fourth receiver at the next level.
Sleeper Alert
Kelechi Osemele*/OL/Iowa State: The Cyclones left tackle was dominant in the first game against Northern Illinois. Osemele did a terrific job protecting his passer, then destroyed opponents run blocking. He possesses the skills and brute strength to start at right tackle or guard in the NFL.
Sliders

Greg Romeus/DL/Pittsburgh: Romeus was non-existent during the Panthers' overtime loss to Utah. The senior totaled just four assisted tackles and was handled most of the night by first-year starter John Cullen, who played for Fullerton (Calif.) Junior College last season. Romeus had been struggling with back problems through most of August camp, something which must be taken into account.
Michael Pouncey/C/Florida: Pouncey's initial foray to the center position was an adventure in the Gators' win over Miami of Ohio. The former guard struggled with the shotgun snap throughout game. Florida QB John Brantley was forced to continually scoop up low snaps or reach for errant snaps which threw off his timing. Pouncey has time to recover, but must significantly improve before scouts seriously consider him as a next-level center.
Lawrence Wilson/OLB/UConn: Wilson was given a top-75 grade by scouts who love his athleticism and ability to swiftly move sideline-to-sideline. His lack of size is a concern, since Wilson is built like a safety at 6-feet, 218-pounds and it was evident in the loss to Michigan. Wilson was easily blocked from the action, constantly got caught up in the wash; and on a number of occasions had ball handlers breaking his tackles before picking up yardage after contact.
Notes: It was a successful return for a number of prominent NFL prospects who did not play in 2009 or suffered through injury-plagued campaigns, starting with Mark Herzlich. The Boston College linebacker showed flashes of his prior dominance against Weber State and lost none of his intensity on the field. He totaled four tackles, a successful performance in every conceivable manner. ... Ricky Brewer, who sat on the sidelines due to a suspension last year, led Colorado State with 10 tackles in the Rams loss' to rival Colorado. Brewer's a terrific athlete that pursues the action sideline-to-sideline with speed. ... Oklahoma State running back Kendall Hunter, who was never healthy as a junior, turned in a brilliant performance against dismal Washington State. Hunter totaled 257 yards on 21 carries, a 12.2 average, and crossed the goal line four times.

Darrelle Revis has finally received the new contract he was seeking from the Jets, and is expected to suit up in Week 1 when New York hosts Baltimore on Monday night.

FanHouse's Dan Graziano earlier reported, citing a source familiar with Revis' contract negotiations, that the two sides were "almost there" and expected to have a deal in place before the regular season began. Revis and the Jets agreed on the final look of that deal very late Sunday night.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports and the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta both reported that Revis' deal would be for seven years. Mehta added, via a source, that the contract could be voided after four years for a total of $46 million, with $32 million guaranteed.

Revis had been seeking a contract in excess of the $15.1 million per year that Oakland's Nnamdi Asomugha currently earns as the NFL's highest-paid defensive back.
"I think this is a great deal for Darrelle and I think it's responsible for the club. From that standpoint, I think it's a win-win," Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said on an impromptu early-morning conference call. "I'm happy. I'm relieved. ...

"This was one of those things where I really wasn't optimistic," Tannenbaum said. "I really wasn't. I'm an optimist by nature, but this was really hard. There was a lot of heavy lifting, a lot of work put into it."

Mehta reported earlier Sunday that Jets head coach Rex Ryan flew to Florida for a face-to-face meeting with Revis, who sat out all of training camp and the entire preseason while seeking a contract extension and a hefty raise.

The Jets did not offer an official statement on Revis' status, though the star cornerback was expected to fly to New York on Monday to sign his contract.

"Obviously, Darrelle's a great player," Tannenbaum said. "He's our guy and he's an important piece to what we're trying to accomplish here. ... I don't think anyone wanted it to take as long as it did, but it did. Now, we can put it behind us and move on to Baltimore."

Revis tweeted the following reaction: "To my family, neil, & john I love u guys I'm comin home baby!!! Revis Island LET'S GO. ... it not has only been hard on u guys but it has for me too. I just want to tell yall that I'm sorry for this process and I can't wait to get back on the field."

Joe Theismann to join NFL Network booth
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 6, 2010 1:24 PM ET

I felt like one of the few people that really enjoyed Matt Millen on NFL Network's Thursday Night broadcast, and defended the Millen-Bob Papa booth any time I could. They had good chemistry and you could learn something about football if you stopped making Millen jokes for a minute.

The booth will be a lot tougher to defend this year. Or learn something from.

Richard Deitsch of SI.com first reported Monday that the NFL Network was adding Joe Theismann to form a three-man broadcast booth. The Network has since confirmed the news.

"Joe is one of the premier analysts in the business," said Eric Weinberger, executive producer NFL Network said in the announcement of Theismann's hire.

This is one of those decisions that makes you question everything about sports television executives. They decided to add a lot more money to their budget in order to drive a significant portion of their audience crazy.

The reason? We suppose they think a "name" will attract viewers, impress advertisers, or make NFL Network somehow look more legitimate.

Theismann dominates the airtime whenever he gets the chance. Unlike Millen, he rarely tells the viewer something we don't already know. The focus is often on Theismann, not the game. Even worse, he sometimes seemed unprepared during Washington's preseason telecasts this year.

Time that Theismann blows hot air will just take away from Papa and Millen, who are both pros. NFL Network had many far better options in their own stable of analysts if they wanted to add a third member.

NFLN hasn't stuck with a consistent lineup for their Thursday Night broadcast for various reasons and we suspect this three-man booth won't last long either. Fans will revolt, and eventually the Network will listen.

We just hope they don't wait two years, like they did with Bryant Gumbel.

The Ravens' quest to upgrade the passing game received another big boost Monday, when the team signed T.J. Houshmandzadeh(notes) to a one-year deal.

Houshmandzadeh, who turns 33 on Sept. 26, became a free agent Saturday when released by the Seahawks. The Ravens will pay Houshmandzadeh the veteran minimum of $855,000, with the Seahawks picking up the remainder of his guaranteed $7 million salary, according to ESPN.

Houshmandzadeh figures to be the No. 3 receiver in Baltimore, working behind starters Anquan Boldin(notes) and Derrick Mason(notes). The Ravens needed another weapon after speedster Donte' Stallworth(notes) broke his foot in preseason and will miss at least the first eight games.

Houshmandzadeh, who had 79 catches for 911 yards and three touchdowns last season, is expected to suit up for next Monday's game vs. the New York Jets.
Yeah, that hold out... you know, after seeing this article... I have to say that Revis, not the Jets were in the wrong here... when I saw he had 3 years left and was making $1 million this year, I thought that he was essentially making peanuts (NFL standards) for the remainder... but he was due another $21 million over those 3 years... I could see the Jets not wanting to cave, simply because, Nnamdi signed a short deal with Oakland, so if he then gets $20+ mil a year, what will stop Revis from doing this again... trading for a very good CB and drafting arguably the best in the 2010 class didn't put the ball in the Jets court, so what will?

Since we don't have a forum dedicated to fantasy hockey, lets go ahead and start a thread.

I just completed my first draft of the year- it was an auction draft on Yahoo. I still hate the autopick system, and it's worse than the NFL. One guy had just five players (granted, they were Parise, Gaborik and Nicklas Backstrom) when I had three spots left to fill.

Anyway, here is my team.....I waited quite a bit to get my filler players, and I ended up with some bargains because everyone spent most of their cash before me. I also made sure to get four starting goaltenders (and my starters are top class) so I have one goalie to bargain with after the draft, as many of the auto teams ignored that position. Standard Yahoo scoring:

C- Joe Thornton, Vincent Lecavalier
LW- Alexandre Burrows, Mason Raymond, Brooks Laich
RW- Martin Havlat, Dustin Brown
D- Mike Green, Jeff Schultz, Mark Streit, Erik Johnson, Tomas Kaberle
G- Martin Brodeur, Pekka Rinne, Cam Ward, Jonathan Quick

The NFL's regular season kicks off this Thursday night in New Orleans with a rematch of last year's NFC Championship Game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Saints. New Orleans, of course, won the title game in overtime before knocking off Indianapolis in the Super Bowl.

While previewing Thursday's matchup for Pro Football Weekly, former Chicago Bears defensive lineman Dan Hampton put his foot in his mouth (actually, he kicked himself in the face) by suggesting the Vikings need to hit New Orleans like Hurricane Katrina did in August 2005.

The exact quote: "If you watch that playoff game last year, the Vikings need to go down there and hit that town like Katrina. I think the Vikings go down there and get it done."

Needless to say, that's probably not going to go over all that well with the people of Louisiana ... or with anybody that has any level of common sense.

I had the 2nd pick in a 12 team league. 6 points for all TD's, 10 yards per point for RB/Wr, and 30 yards per point for QBs.

QB: Ben Roethlisberger, Alex Smith
RB: Adrian Peterson, Arian Foster, Thomas Jones, Laurence Maroney
WR: Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Michael Crabtree, Mike Williams(TB), and Vincent Jackson
TE: Antonio Gates, Aaron Hernandez
K: Ryan Longwell
DEF: New York Giants, Tennessee

I am very weak at QB until Big Ben comes back. My RBs after AP are iffy. I really like my wideouts and tightends. Any other input would be greatly appreciated guys

1. New Orleans- Theyre the top until theyre beaten. I highly doubt they finish this high though.

2. Baltimore- They have really improved this offseason by getting Joey Flacco a go to weapon.

3. Indianapolis- Every year you think this is the year where they get hurt and fall from the echelon of the top teams. Is this finally the year where it happens?

4. Minnesota- Were looking very strong contenders until Harvin collapsed and Rice had hip surgery. They still could contend but there are a LOT of questions surrounding this team.

5. New York Jets- Everything hinges on Mark Sanchez. They got him the weapons, now can he take advantage of it?

6. Green Bay- Their defense looks rock solid and the passing game is scary as ever but games are won in the trenches which is their weak spot.

7. Dallas- They finally got rid of all their temperamental mercurial players, they wont have any classic Dallas meltdowns.

8. Cincinnati- This team has it all, defense, running game, and now with the addition of TO I think Carson Palmer is going to have a breakout/comeback year.

9. New England- They could be classified as a sleeper pick this year since most attention is on the Jets. The Patriots are actually a darkhorse for the first time in a decade.

10. San Diego- How will the absence of Vincent Jackson & LT affect the Charger offense? I think it will take a hit obviously but not as much as people think. Antonio Gates is going to have a monster year.

11. Atlanta- This is my pick for comeback team. They have a healthy "Burner". Ryan has another year under his belt. I wouldnt be surprised if they pulled the upset and beat out New Orleans for the division.

12. San Francisco- Will win the division by default. With that said, they have a scary good defense. If they can get anything out of the passing game that will be a bonus for them.

13. Pittsburgh- Can they weather the first 4 games?

14. Philadelphia- If Kevin Kolb can produce theyre a playoff team. My bet is he will.

15. Washington- They upgraded the entire offense. They should challenge for the wildcard.

16. New York Giants- Im really not sure about this team. They could be decent or really bad. A lot depends on getting the running game going again.

17. Houston- Every year theyre picked to finally breakout. They have the pieces to do it, they just need to execute now.

18. Tennessee- They didnt do anything in the offseason to prevent 8 in the box against Chris Johnson. Can he make a repeat performance?

19. Arizona- Theyre in for a long year, lost quite a few starters. By years end Max Hall will be starting.

20. Miami- This is another team that could have a great year. Chad Henne and Brandon Marshall are going to have fantastic years.

21. Chicago- Mike Martz & Jay Cutler is a match made in heaven. They just need all their young WR's to continue progressing.

22. Seattle- As long as Matt Hasselbeck can stay healthy this team will be decent. With the loss of Walter Jones, I dont see that happening for long though.

23. Kansas City- This is going to be a fun team to watch w/ Cassell, Charles, Bowe, McCluster and Haley calling the shots.

24. Denver- They have an unproven RB and no WR for whichever QB they choose to throw to.

25. Carolina- Start saying sayonara John Fox.

26. Jacksonville- Another team that did nothing in the offseason to prevent teams from loading up against the run.

27. Detroit- They have the makings of a decent team. Give them a couple years and theyll be challenging for the division.

28. Tampa Bay- Its going to be a long year in Tampa. Sophomore QB, very average RB, at best average WR.

29. Oakland- They really think Jason Campbell is that much of an upgrade?

30. Buffalo- CJ Spiller looks awesome. They need to figure out a way to use all 3 RB's to the fullest since that passing game is atrocious.

31. St. Louis- Sam Bradford is the real deal. Too bad he & Steven Jackson are the only two on the team that are.

32. Cleveland- They dont have anything going for them. A week before the season starts and their young RB is done for the year. They dont have a WR to throw to and they have a pleothera of crappy QB's. I feel sorry for Josh Cribbs.

If they are ever in a town/city near you, spend the money and go see them! They have a pretty faithful following everywhere they go (at least the few cities I've seen them in) but you'll see one of the best concerts if you go.

Here is their website and they have some songs on it. I just went to a show last night and had the pleasure of meeting Fred (the drummer/lead singer) and he dedicated a song to me as this was part of my going away celebration. Cowboy Mouth

But be warned, he's known for throwing drumsticks randomly into the audience. I had a friend get his head busted open years ago by one. Also, if you go don't freak out at red spoons flying onto the stage.
